Mr Rajab Kerwat is a leading consultant laparoscopic and gastrointestinal surgeon based in London and Orpington, who specialises in gallstones, inguinal hernias and weight loss surgery, as well as endoscopy, hernia and reflux surgery. He privately practices at the London Bridge Hospital, Chelsfield Park Hospital and The Blackheath Hospital alongside The Sloane Hospital. His NHS base is Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.
Mr Kerwat, who has over 20 years of experience, is highly qualified. He has an MB BCh from Tripoli University Medical School at the University of Al Fateh, Libya, a FRCSEd from The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, a FRCS (Eng) at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and was also awarded a fellowship in General Surgery from The Intercollegiate Board of Surgery.
Furthermore he completed a clinical fellowship in advanced laparoscopic bariatric and metabolic surgery including revisional bariatric surgery, and after qualifying from Tripoli Medical School, Mr Kerwat underwent higher surgical training in London, Cardiff and in Tokyo.
Mr Kerwat is one of the few surgeons in the country combining the endoscopic ERCP and laparoscopic skills in management of gallstone disease. He combines laparoscopic, keyhole/endoscopic and ERCP skills in the management of complicated gall bladder, bile duct and pancreatitis cases. He has advanced laparoscopic surgical skills and has performed many complex keyhole procedures such as anti-reflux, complex hiatus hernia surgery and laparoscopic colorectal surgery.
Mr Kerwat’s expertise in laparoscopic cholecystectomy is illustrated in the several articles he has had published on the topic in various peer-reviewed journals. He also works to provide patients with the highest quality of care, which includes adopting an approach that incorporates continuous development and regular updates of his academic and technical skills.
Mr Kerwat is also a respected name in clinical education, and was an honorary upper GI surgeon at St Thomas’ Hospital, London. He is also a recognised trainer in general and laparoscopic surgery, and was a surgical tutor on the Royal College of Surgeons core surgical training programme.
Mr Kerwat is a member of various professional organisations including the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland. He’s also a member of the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (AUGIS) and the British Obesity & Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS). Furthermore, he’s a member of the British Medical Association (BMA), International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO) and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).
