About Dr. Lau Peng Choong Dr. Lau Peng Choong has been a General Surgeon for the past +20 years. He is also well-known as a bariatric and an upper GI surgeon. He serves as a council member of the Malaysian Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Society(MUGIS), Society of Endoscopic Laproscopic Surgeons of Malaysia (SELSMA), Malaysian Hernia Society(MHS) and Malaysian Metabolic and Bariatric Surgical Society (MyMBS). Dr. Choong has also been appointed as the National Upper GI Surgery Subspecialty Training Committee Board Member. It is a body that governs the training of upper GI surgeons in Malaysia. He completed his MD in 2001 from Universiti Sains Malaysia, followed by Master’s in surgery in 2009, from University of Malaya. Dr. Choong is an expert at laparoscopic and bariatric surgeries. His other main areas of interest include, GI cancers (oesophageal and gastric), gastric ulcers,  achalasia, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, inguinal and abdominal wall hernias. He has pioneered the first Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy service for achalasia. He is the foremost surgeon to use fluroscent surgery in Malaysia for laparoscopic gall bladder surgery and minimally-invasive cancer surgeries. Dr. Choong has co-authored a few research papers on some aspects of his pratice.
