Dr Jayesh Makan is a leading consultant cardiologist based in Shrewsbury who specialises in sports cardiology, chest pain and breathlessness. He also specialises in palpitations, heart failure and arrhythmia. He privately practises at Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital while his NHS base is Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust.
Dr Makan is highly qualified, training at Guy’s and St Thomas’ where he was awarded a BSc (Hons) in Immunology and an MB BS. He also has a fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) and an MRCS, too.
Dr Makan, who is the clinical director of cardiology for his NHS trust and set up a brand-new complex cardiac device service for Shropshire, has developed expertise in pacemaker, defibrillator and biventricular pacemaker implantation. He is also a certified cardiac device specialist (CCDS) with the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners.
Dr Makan, who has an interest in coronary artery disease and coronary angiography, is experienced in dealing with patients that have complex heart failure and arrhythmias after working in the cardiac transplant team at Harefield Hospital.
Dr Makan is highly respected in clinical academia. Between 2003 to 2005, he undertook research under the supervision of Professor Sanjay Sharma who is a leader in sports cardiology and inherited cardiac disease. His research was funded by the Cardiac Risk in the Young charity, of which he is now a trustee.
Furthermore, he has had his work published in various peer-reviewed journals, authored book chapters and has presented at international meetings. He is a member of various professional organisations including the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners, the European Heart Rhythm Association and is a member of the Royal College of Physicians.
