About

Dr Michael Platt is a highly-respected pain medicine and anaesthetic consultant based in London and is the Medical Director of award-winning cannabis clinic Sapphire Medical. He specialises in complex pain issues, Ehlers-Danos syndromes (EDS) and complex cancer pain alongside chronic pain, headaches and migraines. Dr Platt privately practises at Sapphire Medical, King Edward VII’s Hospital, Cromwell Hospital and The Platinum Medical Centre at Wellington Hospital.

Dr Platt has over 30 years of experience working as consultant for the NHS.  He was the senior consultant in pain medicine and consultant in anaesthetics at St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, until June 2021. There he provided a transformational service which delivered reduced mortality rates of under one per cent, among the lowest in the UK.

His expertise in pain management is reflected in his leadership of Sapphire Medical, which has been formed alongside specialist doctors. The clinic enables access to medicinal cannabis for patients who derive clinical benefit through consultation. Sapphire’s experts work within a framework that’s approved by the Care Quality Commission.

Mr Platt’s career achievements are complemented by an equally impressive educational history; he has studied at highly-respected institutions including The University of Western Australia, where he undertook an MBBS, and St Mary’s University, where he was awarded an Master’s degree in Bioethics. He also is a double fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. He has an FRCA in Anaesthesia, Intensive Care and Pain and an FFOMRCA in Pain Medicine.

Further to his medical and educational accomplishments, Mr Platt is an esteemed academic. He has been a senior lecturer in anaesthetics at Imperial College London and is currently Honorary Senior Lecturer in Pain Medicine at St Mary’s Hospital and Imperial College Faculty of Medicine. Mr Platt is also Honorary Consultant in Palliative Care for Kensington and Chelsea Primary Care Trust.

He has an in-depth background of leadership for public bodies and has been the chair of various committees, including his former NHS trust’s medical advisory and local negotiating committee, alongside the British Pain Society’s Philosophy & Ethics Special Interest Group (SIG). Currently he is the medical director of ecumenical organisation the Guild of Health.
