Dr. Nancy H. Coles

Nancy H. Coles, MD, specializes in medical and surgical ophthalmology in New York, NY. Dr. Coles enjoys her work and strives to create a warm atmosphere for patients.

Dr. Coles has special expertise in removing cataracts and implanting premium intraocular lenses, allowing patients to discard their spectacles for activities that require clear vision both near and far. She uses sophisticated femtosecond laser technology to remove cataracts, which makes for safer and gentler cataract removal.

Using a variety of specialized diagnostic and treatment modalities, Dr. Coles also focuses on diagnosing and treating glaucoma and chronic dry eye.

She delivers general ophthalmic care — performing comprehensive eye exams and prescribing eyeglasses and contact lenses — as well as care for patients with a spectrum of other eye conditions. These range from astigmatism, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), and blepharitis to flashes, floaters, and macular pucker.

Dr. Coles performs tests and procedures that include laser treatment for dry eye; glaucoma testing, analysis, and laser surgery; astigmatism-corrected cataract surgery and refractive cataract surgery; retina exams without eye dilation, using Optos® technology; and YAG (yttrium-aluminum garnet) laser capsulotomy, sometimes used to clear up cloudy vision after cataract surgery.

Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, she sees patients age 16 and older.

Dr. Coles opened her practice in 1989. She has served as an associate attending surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital and as both an attending surgeon and a clinical instructor at the New York Eye and Ear (NYEE) Infirmary of Mt. Sinai since that time, as well.

She earned her medical degree at New York University School of Medicine in New York, NY. She completed her medical training at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis and a three-year ophthalmology residency at the NYEE Infirmary of Mt. Sinai. Dr. Coles also holds a BS degree (magna cum laude) in psychology from Tufts University in Medford, MA.

Her professional honors include being named a New York Magazine Top Doctor, a 2018 NY Top Docs Top Doctor, and an American Top Ophthalmologist Award winner consistently since 2006.
