About
Co-director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, since 2003, Dr. Denehy became the director of this division in 2016.
In addition to treating cancers of the female reproductive system, Dr. Denehy has special expertise in performing female pelvic surgery, particularly in complicated and challenging cases.
He is one of the few gynecologic oncologists in the region who performs reconstructive surgery for women with issues such as childbirth injuries, advanced endometriosis, pelvic organ prolapse, and congenital deformities of the reproductive system such as vaginal agenesis. He also performs total vaginal removal for transgender patients.
Dr. Denehy also treats less severe, more common gynecologic conditions such as fibroid tumors, cervical abnormalities, pelvic pain, and vaginal dryness.
He performs both traditional open surgeries and minimally invasive procedures, opting for nonsurgical treatments (and less invasive surgeries including laparoscopic/robotic hysterectomy) whenever he can.
Dr. Denehy’s philosophy of patient care is simple. “It’s the same thing I tell the residents that I teach: do the right thing,” he says. “I am a conservative/no regrets surgeon, which means that I endeavor to exhaust all conservative treatment methods before I consider surgery.”
Of the women who do end up needing some type of surgery, many are back home quickly.
“Institution of new Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols mean that many patients are able to go home either that day or with a 23-hour stay,” says Dr. Denehy, who in June 2021 performed his 1,500th robotic gynecologic surgery.
Dr. Denehy delivers leading-edge care by keeping current on advances in his field.
“I stay apprised of the latest studies and surgical techniques, so I can give my patients the most advanced care and teach my residents about the newest methods and technologies,” he says.
Dr. Denehy earned his medical degree at Wake Forest University Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He completed a four-year obstetrics and gynecology residency at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. He also completed a gynecologic oncology fellowship at Strong Memorial Hospital/University of Rochester in Rochester, New York as well as fistula training at Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia.
Dr. Denehy is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He is also a member of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology and is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, with certification of special qualification in gynecologic oncology.
In addition to being a Castle Connolly Top Doctor since 1999, Dr. Denehy has been named to the NJ Monthly Top Doctors and New York Magazine Best Doctors lists.
