About

Mr Daniel Dragnev is a leading consultant ophthalmic surgeon based in St Helens who specialises in cataract surgery under topical (eye drop) local anaesthesia. In addition, he is also an expert in refractive lens exchange alongside the management of medical retina conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration. With further expertise in glaucoma management, Mr Dragnev is also able to perform cataract operations in combination with glaucoma surgery, using XEN gel, iStent , Hydrus and Preserflo micro-stent implants.

Other cutting-edge treatments Mr Dragnev includes in his ophthalmic surgery practice are anti-VEGF injections (Lucentis and Eylea), steroid implants (Ozurdex and ILuvien) as well as micro-pulse laser therapy. Alongside his NHS work at St Helens and Knowsley, where he is the diabetic retinopathy lead, Mr Dragnev currently sees patients at Viewpoint Vision. He also operates at Freedom Vision.

Mr Dragnev qualified from the Medical University of Varna and then went on to complete training in Bulgaria, Germany and the UK. He joined Hywel Dda University Healthy Board in 2010 as speciality doctor in ophthalmology and locum consultant ophthalmic surgeon, before relocating to England to practise at St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals. In 2016, Mr Dragnev was appointed consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Spire Liverpool Hospital and at SpaMedica, a year later. He is a fellow of The Royal College of Ophthalmologists, the International Council of Ophthalmology and the European Board of Ophthalmology.

Besides his clinical practice, Mr Dragnev maintains an interest in medical education from his junior years, when he worked as an assistant professor in ophthalmology at the Medical University of Varna. He is, at present, an honorary recognised teacher at the University of Liverpool.
