Professor Francesco Del Galdo is a leading consultant rheumatologist & scleroderma and connective tissue disease specialist based in Leeds. He specialises in Raynaud’s disease, scleroderma and dermatomyositis alongside Sjogren’s syndrome, lupus, vasculitis and other inflammatory conditions. He privately practises at Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital and his NHS base is Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust.

Professor Del Galdo has an impressive educational achievements. He graduated with honours in Medicine in Italy where he also was awarded a national award for Best Young Researcher of the Year, 2001. He then went on to specialise in immunology in 2003, and then moved to the USA to undertake a PhD and post-doctoral fellowship in Rheumatology. Here he specialised in the diagnosis and management of connective tissue diseases, particularly scleroderma.

After moving to Leeds in 2009, Professor Del Galdo founded and led the NIHR Scleroderma Research Programme at the city’s Biomedical Research Centre, alongside the Raynaud’s and Scleroderma Clinical Excellence Centre for Yorkshire and the Humber. 

Professor Del Galdo is highly respected as a clinical researcher and academic. He has been teaching medical doctors in the UK and Europe for the past 10 years, and is an professor at the University of Leeds. Previously, he was an associate professor at the university and at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, USA. He also runs a prestigious research programme at the Leeds Institute of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Medicine which is focussed on personalised medicine. 

Professor Del Galdo’s research has been published in more than 120 papers in peer-reviewed journals and he has presented at various national and international meetings. He is a member of the British Society of Rheumatology.
