About Professor Umesh Lalloo Professor Umesh Lalloo as a pulmonologist with many years of experience, specialises in the treatment and management of diseases that affect the lungs. He studied medicine at Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine, where he graduated in 1980.  After becoming a member of the College of Physicians, South Africa in 1984, Professor Lalloo went on to become a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Community Health and National Centre of Occupational Health at the University of Witwatersrand. He also served as Honorary Senior Registrar in the Respiratory Unit at JG Strydom Hospital in 1985 before going on to become a specialist and lecturer at the University of Natal and King Edward VIII Hospital in 1986.  In 1989, Professor Lalloo became the head of the Respiratory Unit in the Medical Department at the University of Natal.  Professor Lalloo is also dedicated to the treatment and management of HIV and TB. In 2001, he successfully obtained a $72 million grant from the Global Fund for HIV and TB care programs. Additionally, he also served as the Principal Investigator of the Adult AIDS Clinical Research site at the Enhancing Care Foundation.  As part of his career, Professor Lalloo has pioneered many research projects and treatment initiatives for those suffering from HIV and TB.   He also still serves as a Professor at the Durban University of Technology.
